Dusty Springfield – Spooky / 1970

‘Spooky’ from 1970 has been compiled occasionally. A hit for The Classics IV, it was a superb cover choice as was it’s A side, The Rascals ‘How Can I Be Sure’.

Originally recorded by Classics IV as a jazz fusion track, Springfield’s sultry soul take is what really brought this simple, elegant song its prominence. It was reintroduced to a modern audience through it’s heavy usage in the Guy Ritchie film Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.

Nouvelle Vague (album) 2004

Nouvelle Vague is one of the most interesting musical concepts to emerge in the past ten years; take some of the most beloved punk, postpunk, goth and new wave songs, arrange them in a laid-back acoustic samba style, and add a nonchalant French female vocal.

Put it on as a background and don’t take it too seriously, then you’ll get some kicks out of it.

John Fogerty – The Wall / 1975

This one-man extravaganza finds John Fogerty plowing the same ground he worked with Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Spirit – Nature’s Way / 1971

From the album, The Twelve Dreams of Dr, Sardonicus.

“Nature’s Way” was probably Spirit’s second most popular tune with “I’ve Got A Line on You” being the most recognizable song. There are others such as “Fresh Garbage” and “Mr. Skin” that were known for FM airplay as well.

JACKIE BRENSTON – Rocket 88 / 1951

“Rocket 88”, recorded at Sun and released on Chess in 1951, is generally considered by most musicologists as the very first rock ‘n’ roll song ever

Many songs attempt to lay claim to the title of earliest rock ‘n’ roll record but one of the first—and strongest—contenders is “Rocket 88″ by Jackie Brenston & His Delta Cats, one of the top R&B hits of 1951.

Genesis – Land Of Confusion / 1986

Now who can forget that amazing video which really comes to mind every time I hear this track. I’m sure most of you recall, the one with all those creepy puppets!

Genesis 1986

This song is about the Cold War and fears people had in the 80’s. Listen to the lyrics closely. The lyrics of the song basically question whether mankind as a whole has got its priorities right

Allman Brothers Band – Ain’t Wastin’ Time No More / 1972

allman brothers aint wastin time no more

Aint Wasting Time No More is awesome. This is one of the better tracks I have heard from the early 1970’s

allman brothers 1972

The best studio cuts are Greg’s “Ain’t Wastin’ Time No More“, again, his vocals are just full of that great blues feel, and Dickey Betts’ “Blue Sky”, his lead guitar on this one is a pure ten!
