If you like Mark Kozelek / Sun Kil Moon do not delay, just immerse yourself and feel the warm glow. This is more mellow and even-toned than some of his others, and is certainly a little world-weary but not in a bad way. There are excellent tracks like This Bird has a Broken Wing, and others that feel a bit unfinished like Track no 8, but altogether it takes you more directly into the soul of the man more directly than any other album.
Looking back, the tracklist of the 1970 Camden LP ‘Almost In Love’ looks far stronger now than it did when it came out. Then it contained two low-charting movie singles ‘A Little Less Conversation’ and ‘Rubberneckin” which have now become two of Elvis’ best known tracks of all-time! It also included (the Australian #1) ‘Edge Of Reality’ and the powerful ‘U.S Male’ and for once it featured very little of Colonel Parker’s movie throw-aways.
Once alternative rock entered the big leagues, it seemed likely that Urge Overkill, with their exceptionally accessible combination of arena rock, power pop, and underground punk, would follow Nirvana to the top of the charts, but mainstream America never quite understood their ironic outlook, embracing the group only after their cover of Neil Diamond’s “Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon” was used in a key scene in Pulp Fiction.
